Within weeks of quitting the job last November, Rahul Dravid was convinced to stay on as India’s head coach after a phone call from captain Rohit Sharma.

The reason that made it special was when Rahul Dravid screamed his lungs out after Virat Kohli handed over him the T20 World Cup trophy. It wasn’t the first time Dravid had let loose. He has done that in the past. But never as a world champion.
Never with the World Cup in hand. He had three attempts as a player and three as a coach. It was not possible for his sixth attempt to turn out successful if Rohit Sharma hadn’t done so.
It was the defeat that India took at the hands of Australia in the ODI World Cup final on 19 November last year at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad that Dravid was not ready to extend his contract for.
His contract was over and wasn’t keen to continue when captain Rohit Sharma’s phone call changed everything.

Said association of Rohit and Dravid made India world champions once more after a gap of 13 years.In the last two World Cups, India won 18 matches out of 20 and lost just once—that too the ODI final against Australia—with one match in this T20 World Cup being called off due to rain without a ball being bowled. Adds to it their making it to the WTC finals last year. This makes India the most consistent team across formats.

Dravid’s replacement to be named soon

While incumbent Dravid will continue as the head coach of India, Gautam Gambhir, the former opener, is slated to take over from him. The high-profile job interview was already completed by the Cricket Advisory Committee that also shortlisted former India women’s coach W V Raman along with Gautam Gambhir.
Also, the appointment of a selector will be made soon, mentioned Shah, in the Caribbean with the India team which he said won the T20 World Cup title on Saturday, defeating South Africa by seven runs.
“Both the coach and selector appointments will be made soon. CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names and after reaching Mumbai whatever they have decided we will go by that. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but new coach will join from Sri Lanka series,” Shah added.
